The role of any parent is to make sure that their children have the best resources around to be the best that they can be. So when your child is starting to have poor performance in school, chances are good that you’re going to want to help them. Do all children want to get help from their parents? Of course not — childhood development phases mean that children are slowly building up to being independent. They want to do their own thing, on their own terms. However, if you already have a good bond with your children, then they will surely see that all you really want to do is help. It’s better than just trying to be hopeful and wish for the best.

So, what can you do to help your child get ahead at school? Well, the first thing that you’re going to want to do is identify what their strengths and weaknesses are. It’s pretty tempting to just ignore the strengths and only focus on the weaknesses, but you have to know what your child’s strengths are so that you can continue to encourage them. Strengths in education are like muscle sin fitness. If they aren’t constantly trained, they’re going to become weak!

Weaknesses don’t have to be weakness forever. You should be able to work with your child on a solid and strategic plan. You cannot pressure them to make results overnight — all that will do is give them unnecessary stress and cause them to panic. It’s better to step back and make sure that they have actually everything that they need to succeed in life, rather than just assuming they do at school. For example, you might think that your child can hear the teacher properly, but they may have already suffered some hearing loss. Likewise with vision — if your child doesn’t have glasses and they need them, you will want to make an appointment with the doctor right away.

The main takeaway here is consistency — you want to ensure that your child is constantly studying. Distractions can abound in a study environment, and that’s really not what you want to experience for your child. The more that you can do to improve their learning environment at home, the more chances they’ll have at doing better in school.

Of course, you don’t want to stop the learning process — instead of letting them forget all about school in the summer, you need to find ways to make learning fun — why not get started today?

What To Do When Your Child Suddenly Doesn’t Want to Go to School

Some children have decided that there’s no way that they’ll ever like going to school, and some parent shave gotten used to that. But what do you do when your child used to love going to school and they suddenly don’t want to step foot on school property ever again? It’s time to put on your detective hat and magnifying glass and look further into the issue.

You see, when children are under stress, their behaviors change. They might get tired faster, they might experience mood swings, and they might even find that the foods that they loved aren’t tasty to them anymore. Their performance in school might go down and if school is where the stress is coming from, then you definitely will see a lack of interest in going to school.

There’s no need to panic at all — a lot of children go through a phase where they don’t want to go to school. It could be that the classes they’re taking are doing something very challenging, which would mean that there’s a fear of falling behind or not scoring as high as the other students. You need to also think about the social side of things — they might be being bullied at school, which would definitely explain a lack of interest.

Don’t be afraid to go to the school and speak to all of the teachers about your child’s problem. Part of a teacher’s job is to make sure that all of the students are in a comfortable learning environment, and if there’s something that they can do then it’s definitely in their best interests to help. No teacher wants to see a child do worse than they should.

At home, you will want to make sure that you aren’t confrontational about the issue. If your child feels that you’re going to be mad either way, then they’re going to sink further into their slump and feel that you will not be there for them when they need you.

No matter what, don’t give up on your child. Continue to work through the issues and get help from their teachers. If their teachers aren’t willing to help, then you’re going to have to move up the ladder until you get the help that you’re looking for. It might not be something you want to do, but your child needs your help!

If you’re thinking about college, you’re thinking about the price tag. Anyone that says otherwise is either getting a full ride no matter what, or they’re blessed with a trust fund. College tuition on the rise and it seems like there’s no end in sight.

The old expectation was that parents would be able to help their children bridge the gaps that grants, scholarships, and even loans couldn’t. However, the recession has changed all of that considerably. Instead of getting things done, you’re going to have to actually calculate in the reality that you’re not going to be able to provide for your children in that manner. When your job is unstable, you have to make sure that every penny goes to the day to day living expenses of your family. That’s just the way that it has to be.

So the next part of your journey is going to be looking into alternatives to make college a cheaper option. Thankfully, the colleges finally have your back through the use of tuition discounts.

Of course, with every discount program there are some requirements that need to be met in order to take advantage of them. This time around, it’s not just “need” (which just about every student can prove now), but it’s academic performance. Yes, it’s true — those high school test scores actually do count for something. So if your student is a little unprepared for the SAT or the ACT, you might want to go ahead and spring for those test preparation classes. They’re inexpensive and they really can help your child rise higher in terms of test scores. Just raising the ACT score by two or three points can make the difference between paying full tuition rates, and getting to pay 66% less in tuition.

That’s money that can go towards future years of college, or current expenses that your student will need in order to succeed. Now is the perfect time to start asking all of the right questions at the college that your child is most interested in — why not check it out for yourself?
